Box office revenue for ‘Chiikawa: The Movie—The Secret of Mermaid Island,’ distributed by TOHO, reached approximately ¥17.2 billion in its 11th week, while sales of related merchandise set a new all-time record. The company has explained that the earnings revision will not affect its core business.
Box office revenue for the TOHO-distributed Chiikawa film reached ¥17.24 billion in its 11th week, making it the highest-grossing film among those released in 2026. Its simultaneous IMAX release, 4DX screenings and audience participation screenings also contributed.
As of the end of September, approximately 2 months after its release, sales of Chiikawa film merchandise, including sales through e-commerce sites, ranked first among all films distributed by TOHO on a tax-exclusive list-price basis.
Operating revenue from the IP and animation business for June–August increased by ¥1.8 billion year on year, or 32.6%, to ¥24.877 billion, driven by strong sales of merchandise, pamphlets and theater goods.
TOHO revised its full-year earnings forecast on the same day, but said the film's hit had not affected revisions to revenue or operating profit from its core business.
