The Chinese Embassy in Japan announced a sharp increase in visa fees for Japanese nationals. The fee will be ¥16,750 for a single-entry visa and ¥50,250 for a multiple-entry visa valid for 1 year, with the new fees taking effect on the 14th. The move is seen as a countermeasure to the Japanese government’s increase in visa issuance fees for foreign nationals.
The Chinese Embassy in Japan announced on the 11th that it would sharply raise visa fees for Japanese nationals. The new fees will take effect on the 14th. A single-entry visa, which allows 1 entry within its validity period, will rise from the previous ¥2,250 to ¥16,750, approximately 7.4 times the previous fee, while a multiple-entry visa valid for 1 year will cost ¥50,250. Applications submitted before the 14th will be subject to the previous fees.
The embassy described the increase as “a measure based on reciprocity” but did not disclose detailed reasons. The move is seen by some as a countermeasure to the Japanese government’s decision to raise visa issuance fees for foreign nationals fivefold from July.
Although China’s stance toward Japan is said to be hardening, the visa exemption for Japanese nationals staying in China for up to 30 days for tourism or business remains in place. Some observers therefore believe the immediate impact of the fee increase will be limited.
