SKY Perfect JSAT has launched AQUANA, a new service in Japan that automatically extracts flooded areas from a single SAR image and provides results in as little as 30 minutes.
On 22 October 2026, SKY Perfect JSAT announced the launch in Japan of AQUANA (Aquana), a new service that automatically extracts flooded areas from a single SAR image and provides analysis results in as little as 30 minutes. The service is characterized by its ability to extract flooded areas using only a single image captured after a disaster, as well as by the characteristics of SAR, which can observe areas regardless of weather conditions or whether it is day or night.
AQUANA automatically analyzes flooded areas using an algorithm when a single SAR image acquired after a disaster is uploaded. The company explains that flooded areas can be extracted without comparing images from multiple periods before and after the disaster, as was previously required. The service supports multiple SAR satellites in Japan and overseas.
The service takes as little as 30 minutes from upload to delivery of the results, with the analysis itself taking approximately 10 minutes. Analysis conditions are adjusted automatically, and the service is intended to be usable without specialist knowledge. Potential applications include initial response and damage assessment by local governments, as well as confirmation of affected areas and preparation for claims assessment by insurers. The company plans to expand overseas in stages.
