Hiroshima Prefecture is developing a carbon recycling demonstration center on Osakikamijima and promoting the separation, capture and resource utilization of CO2, while also strengthening initiatives such as hosting international conferences and expanding education and support programs.
Hiroshima Prefecture, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO have established a carbon recycling demonstration research center on Osakikamijima and are intensively promoting the development and demonstration of technologies to separate and capture CO2 emitted from power plants and reuse it in concrete, chemicals, fuels and other products. Over the medium to long term, the initiative aims to create environmental businesses in the region and contribute to regional economic development.
Efforts are being made to strengthen the technologies and cooperative relationships supporting carbon neutrality through international conferences and the promotion of industry-academia-government collaboration. The 5th International Conference on Carbon Recycling for Industry, Academia and Government was the first edition held outside Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture and included a student exchange program. In recent years, the Workshop on Carbon Management has also been held, presenting leading examples of technology, policy and financing.
Hiroshima Prefecture formulated and revised the second edition of the Hiroshima Prefecture Carbon Circular Economy Promotion Initiative, incorporating an action policy for approximately three years from fiscal 2025. It is enhancing research and development support programs through human-resource development, member exchanges and sandbox-style support (CR-SANDBOX) provided through the council.
The prefecture continues to support the social implementation of carbon recycling technologies through research presentation events, the selection of subsidy projects and public grants, and the process of returning the results of related technology research and development to Hiroshima Prefecture and beyond is continuing.
Hiroshima Prefecture is promoting human-resource development and the dissemination of technology through recruitment of new members, matching events and next-generation education.
