After the Cubs were eliminated by the Padres, PCA, or Pete Crow-Armstrong, spoke of his disappointment behind the bench and discussed the futures of key players, including Seiya Suzuki (鈴木誠也), in the locker room. Suzuki's free-agency status is expected to be a focus this offseason.
On 30 September, the Cubs lost 4-1 to the Padres in a game held on 1 October Japan time, ending their dream of reaching the postseason. After the game, PCA went hitless for the second consecutive game and expressed his frustration. The loss also confirmed the Cubs' second defeat in the wild-card series and sealed their elimination.
In an interview conducted in the locker room, PCA said that the players' futures were not something they could control, stressing how difficult it is to say goodbye. He also said that accepting the reality that the same group of players cannot remain together every year is the most difficult part.
PCA expressed particular appreciation for Seiya Suzuki (鈴木誠也), with whom he supported the outfield, especially in right field, saying that simply having Suzuki on the field makes the time they spend playing baseball more enjoyable. Looking back, he said the team's success this season was thanks to Suzuki and Happ.
Looking ahead to next season, PCA said their job is to prepare to win even if they become the next team, and once again expressed his gratitude to the veterans with whom he fought throughout the season.
