In the Tokyo market on 7 August, Sanrio temporarily recovered to the ¥1,400 range during trading and set a new year-to-date high. The shares ultimately closed at ¥1,397, up more than 6% from the previous day and marking a third consecutive day of gains. Buying following the earnings announcement is believed to have contributed to the rise.
For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Sanrio reported net sales of ¥194 billion, operating profit of ¥77.8 billion, ordinary profit of ¥79.3 billion and net income of ¥54.6 billion, all representing substantial increases from the previous fiscal year. The figures indicate high capital efficiency and a stable earnings base.
The company emphasizes its asset-light business model, under which licensing fees and other character usage royalties account for most of its sales mix. Its equity ratio of 66.4%, ROE of 41.6% and operating margin of 40.1% have been viewed favorably as indicators of its strong financial health.
Sanrio is moving to reduce its reliance on Hello Kitty and strengthen its multi-character strategy. Compared with the fiscal year ended March 2016, Hello Kitty’s share of sales has declined, while the share attributable to other characters has increased. Growth in overseas markets has also contributed, with sales in Japan, Asia, Europe, North America and South America all expanding year on year.
