On the 12th, the won strengthened sharply to the 1,333-won level against the dollar, recording its strongest level in about 2 years. Strong semiconductor exports pushed total exports to a record high.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market on the 12th, the won fell to 1,333.2 per dollar at around 9:56 a.m., moving lower from the previous business day's level. This marked the strongest won level in about 2 years.
The view was expressed that the waning expectation of further dollar appreciation that day encouraged the won's advance. According to provisional figures from the Korea Customs Service, exports for the 1st–10th of this month totaled $26.1 billion, up 102.0% from the same period a year earlier, marking a record high. Semiconductor exports in particular surged 170.9% to $12.2 billion, driving the overall increase.
The Dollar Index stood at 102.133. The won also strengthened against the yen, with the won's cross rate against the yen recording 100 yen = 845.21 won. The rate had fallen to 844.16 won on the 7th, indicating further won appreciation.
The level recorded on this day was the strongest in about 2 years, since the low of 1,331.3 won on 4 October 2024.
