Yokohama Takashimaya will hold an event addressing social issues through the use of neglected bamboo groves. The event will feature tastings of domestically produced menma, including Hama Menma made from bamboo groves in Yokohama, as well as exhibitions and sales of bamboo products.
As part of TSUNAGU ACTION WEEKS, Yokohama Takashimaya will expand initiatives focused on considering the future of the planet and ourselves, holding events on every floor from 7 to 20 October. During the event period, it will work with the local general incorporated association Yokohama Chikurin Research Institute to address the problem of neglected bamboo groves. The series of events will be built around the theme of “eating deliciously and using enjoyably.”
As a project to make delicious use of neglected bamboo groves, various bamboo-based products and menu items will be introduced and sold, centered on Hama Menma produced by the Yokohama Chikurin Research Institute. The event will promote the use of bamboo vegetables and domestically produced menma through bamboo grove maintenance and community collaboration.
At the Craft Menma Market, visitors can taste and compare 14 varieties of domestically produced menma made from bamboo harvested in 12 prefectures nationwide. The market runs from 7 to 13 October at the event space in Foodies’ Port 1 on basement level 1, where several stores will offer products made with Hama Menma.
During the same period, household goods made with eco-friendly materials derived from bamboo groves will also be exhibited and sold, and bamboo tea tastings will be offered. The event will be held at a special venue next to Elevator B on the 7th floor, where bamboo grove maintenance initiatives, bamboo-paper notebooks and other related products will be introduced.
An experience event combining bamboo grove maintenance with bamboo baumkuchen-making will also be held by reservation. The event will combine bamboo grove maintenance and hands-on activities in Yokohama and is scheduled for 22 November. Participation is limited to Takashimaya Kids Club members, and online advance registration will open at noon on 7 October.
