Japan’s drone market is expected to reach US$6.47 billion by 2035, representing annual growth of 11.68%. Growth is attributed not only to aircraft sales but also to expanding applications in logistics, surveying and infrastructure inspections, as well as the shift toward social infrastructure services.
Japan’s drone market is forecast to grow from US$2.14 billion in 2025 to US$6.47 billion in 2035, with a CAGR of 11.68% over the forecast period. The market is moving beyond aircraft sales toward applications premised on continuous operation, including logistics, disaster response, remote monitoring and public infrastructure maintenance. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism regards expanded use of unmanned aircraft as a means of addressing social issues and identifies the provision of drones as business systems as a future competitive factor.
Labor shortages in logistics and the sustainability of regional deliveries are cited as important factors pushing drone adoption from the demonstration stage into actual operations. As preparations advance during the intensive reform period, optimizing total operating costs, including facility locations, automation and data integration, is becoming a priority.
Infrastructure inspections and industrial equipment management are also becoming important sources of revenue. The key to competitiveness will be acquiring data by combining high-resolution cameras, various sensors and AI analysis, and applying the results to maintenance planning. Against the backdrop of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s policy to expand utilization, inspection work is expected to shift toward automation and services based on continuing contracts.
The analysis also indicates that, given the comprehensiveness of the list of key companies and the perspective of domestic industrial security, domestic maintenance capabilities, data management, software updates and the ability to respond to public procurement will be differentiating factors.
Toward 2035, the market is expected to be shaped less by the number of drones manufactured than by capabilities in regulatory compliance, autonomous operation, data utilization and business integration. Drones are expected to transition into an autonomous services market supporting logistics, maintenance and disaster preparedness.
