ENEOS and Nippon Paper Industries have entered into a comprehensive partnership to promote the use of second-generation bioethanol made from non-food feedstocks. Pilot operations are scheduled to begin at the Fuji Mill during FY2027, with the companies collaborating on feedstock supply, technology development and promotion of bioethanol use.
ENEOS and Nippon Paper Industries have agreed to pursue a comprehensive partnership aimed at promoting the use of second-generation bioethanol made from non-food resources. The companies plan to cooperate in three areas: manufacturing technology development, feedstock procurement and promotion of bioethanol use.
Specifically, a pilot plant will be built at Nippon Paper Industries’ Fuji Mill. ENEOS will install the equipment for demonstration operations, while Nippon Paper Industries will operate the demonstration plant. Pilot operations are scheduled to begin during FY2027.
Unlike first-generation bioethanol, which is made from sugars and starches, second-generation bioethanol uses non-food feedstocks. It is expected to deliver greater CO2 reductions and avoid competition with food resources, and could also contribute to the implementation of Japan’s low-carbon fuel policies.
The companies will continue to jointly examine potential feedstock procurement options and accelerate initiatives to promote a decarbonized society and a circular economy, with commercialization from FY2030 onward in view.
