Analyst upgrades and optimistic views, including upward EPS revisions, are reportedly influencing the investment case for Valero Energy.
In recent years, analysts have become more optimistic about Valero Energy. Upgrades from several firms, higher earnings estimates and a bullish Strong Buy rating from Zacks Rank are increasing confidence in the near-term outlook. At the same time, concerns have also been raised that the stock could trade above its estimated fair value, along with regulatory and asset impairment risks.
In its second-quarter 2026 earnings, Valero Energy reported net income of $3.72 billion and EPS of $12.62, both significantly above the year-earlier levels. Against this backdrop, the company conducted more than $2.261 billion in share repurchases during the second quarter alone. These developments suggest that strong earnings and enhanced shareholder returns are contributing to the market's optimism. There is also a view that the stock remains exposed to the effects of regulatory changes and asset impairment risks.
An analysis report projects revenue of $112.7 billion and profit of $4.7 billion by 2029, and assesses that the company may be able to maintain its current profit level even if revenue declines by approximately 1.5% annually. At the same time, fair value is estimated at $267.83, with another estimate indicating approximately 23% downside for the stock from its current level.
