Nachi-Katsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, announced on the 27th that it had entered into an agreement with Ad-Sol Nissin and the Keio Research Institute at SFC, and would use data to promote the restoration of coastal marine habitats and the absorption and sequestration of carbon dioxide. As part of efforts to achieve decarbonization in the region, wide-area monitoring using image data will be conducted.
Nachi-Katsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, announced plans to use data to restore coastal marine habitats under an agreement with Ad-Sol Nissin, an IT company specializing in geographic information systems, and the Keio Research Institute at SFC. The agreement aims to efficiently promote the absorption and sequestration of carbon dioxide through marine habitat restoration.
The town declared in 2020 that it would achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and has been working to expand marine habitats. It aims to increase coastal seagrasses and seaweeds, including eelgrass, dwarf eelgrass and Ecklonia cava.
Ad-Sol Nissin and the Keio Research Institute at SFC will build a system to analyze satellite and drone image data and map the distribution and condition of marine habitats across a wide area, using the data to build a record of restoration efforts and improve restoration efficiency. Mayor Junichiro Hori (堀 順一郎), who signed the agreement, said the initiative aimed to serve as a model for municipalities nationwide, recognizing the difficulty of surveying the extensive marine area on its own.
