Former SPK Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül explained the matter to Hürriyet before being questioned as part of an investigation into the funds. Gönül said that the SPK conducted routine monitoring and investigations and had imposed fines on the funds concerned. It has been reported that the investigation will continue and that determining the facts could take 3–4 months.
Former SPK Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül was summoned to give a statement as a “suspect” as part of the fund investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Before giving his statement, Gönül spoke to Hürriyet, saying that the necessary oversight had been carried out during his tenure and that fines had been imposed on certain funds.
Gönül said that the surveillance units at the SPK monitored daily increases in share prices and examined suspicions of artificial increases or manipulation, with further investigations and the transition of the case to the investigation stage taking place as suspicions intensified. He emphasised that the monitoring was continuous.
In response to a question about whether a 1,000-fold increase in a share could escape the SPK’s notice, Gönül said that oversight was strict, but that nothing could be guaranteed with absolute certainty and that the evidentiary process could not be completed overnight. He added that the case and investigation would generally take 3–4 months.
