Warren Buffett increased his holdings in Japan’s five major trading companies and invested approximately ¥287.4 billion in Tokio Marine Holdings, acquiring 2.49% of its outstanding shares. As global capital rediscovers Japan, momentum is building to reconsider China.
Global capital is increasingly moving toward Japan, with Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway appearing to increase its holdings in the stocks of Japan’s five major trading companies (Mitsubishi Corporation, ITOCHU Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation, excluding Marubeni). Its ownership stake had reached a level above 9% as of the end of 2025, and media reports say the purchases are continuing. In addition, in March 2026, it invested approximately ¥287.4 billion in Tokio Marine Holdings, acquiring 2.49% of its outstanding shares, according to an analysis by Nomura Securities.
Around the same time, Buffett was reported to have sold U.S. stocks, particularly Apple. Some observers point to a broader global rebalancing as the backdrop to Japan’s appeal, as Buffett favors holding solid, trustworthy companies for the long term over flashy investments. While global investors are rediscovering Japan, there is also a view that momentum is growing to reconsider China.
