GF announced plans to build a new plant in New York State as its third U.S. investment project under the U.S.-Japan tariff agreement. Total investment will be up to $21 billion (approximately ¥3 trillion), with operations scheduled to begin in 2029.
GlobalFoundries (GF), a major U.S. semiconductor contract manufacturer, announced plans to build a new semiconductor plant in New York State using Japanese investment based on the U.S.-Japan tariff agreement. As the third U.S. investment project, the investment will total up to $21 billion (approximately ¥3 trillion).
Approximately $10 billion will initially be invested in construction of the new plant, followed by a further investment of approximately $10 billion. Two plants are planned, with operations targeted to begin in 2029. Tokyo Electron and other major semiconductor manufacturing equipment suppliers will provide support. GF said the two plants would significantly increase production capacity in the United States.
The U.S. and Japanese governments are reportedly signaling their intention to strengthen U.S. semiconductor production capacity through this framework.
