EDMI Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of 大崎電気工業, has started a smart-meter demonstration trial covering customers supplied by Central Rural Electric Cooperative as part of its planned entry into the US market. The trial is expected to compare the meters with those already installed from other manufacturers.
In the United States, the expansion of data centers driven by the spread of AI is increasing investment in next-generation AMI 2.0, which enhances power-grid control, measurement and monitoring. The 大崎電気 Group has been assessing the commercial potential of its US business since fiscal 2025 and is expected to begin demonstration trials with multiple electric utilities during fiscal 2026.
The trial will use EDMI smart meters, with data collected and managed in the cloud-based Storm system. Edge intelligence will be used to analyze consumption and power quality at the ends of the distribution network. The CEO of Central Rural Electric Cooperative said the company would assess whether improved data access and visibility could enhance reliability. EDMI's Group CEO said the company would support the evaluation of next-generation AMI functions and deepen its understanding of local needs.
Under the commercial validation schedule, 大崎電気工業 plans to open a US office and conduct market analysis in fiscal 2025, followed by demonstration trials with multiple electric utilities from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2027. It also plans to begin developing the ANSI-compliant next-generation smart meter NEOS, with the aim of fully ramping up sales activities in fiscal 2028.
