UBE Corporation and 三菱セメント announced plans to build a waste plastics collection and recycling facility in Izumiotsu, Osaka Prefecture. Once completed, coal used in the firing process will be replaced with waste plastic-derived fuel, with CO2 emissions expected to fall by approximately 170,000 tonnes annually.
UBE三菱セメント has unveiled plans to open a waste plastics collection and recycling facility in Izumiotsu, Osaka Prefecture. Operations are scheduled to begin in June 2027. Coal will be replaced with fuel derived from waste plastics and other waste materials to reduce emissions from the cement firing process.
The facility will be equipped to shred approximately 102,000 tonnes of waste plastics, wood waste and construction debris annually. The shredded material will be shipped by sea to the Kyushu plant in Kanda and the Yamaguchi plants in Ube and Mine, with annual CO2 reductions of approximately 170,000 tonnes expected as a result.
The company has set a target of switching 50% of its thermal energy to waste-derived alternatives by 2030. The substitution rate was 23% in fiscal 2025, and is expected to rise to approximately 28% once the new facility begins operations. MUCCリサイクル関西 will handle operations.
