The Nikkei 225 extended its gains in Tokyo trading on the 28th, closing ¥685.82 higher than the previous day at ¥63,954.19. Gains in the KOSPI, which has a high weighting of semiconductor stocks, supported risk appetite and drew funds into AI-related stocks.
The Nikkei 225's gain briefly exceeded ¥1,000 and increased further in the afternoon session. Among major semiconductor companies, SK hynix announced that consolidated net profit for July–September 2026 was 3.2 times the year-earlier level, with demand for high-performance memory for AI remaining strong. Buying also spread to Japanese stocks related to the KOSPI theme.
Game stocks including Konami Group, Bandai Namco Holdings and Capcom fell. Domestic-demand stocks, insurers and trading companies also declined notably, with some selling reflecting a wait-and-see stance ahead of domestic corporate earnings. The TOPIX for the TSE Prime Market fell for the first time in 3 trading days, closing at 3991.71.
Trading value on the TSE Prime Market was approximately ¥8.0742 trillion, with trading volume of 2.38210 billion shares. There were 432 advancing issues and 1,096 declining issues.
