Yokogawa Electric has launched the OpreX Gas Density Meter, which supports a color touchscreen and digital communications. The explosion-proof version is scheduled for release around the end of April 2027 and is expected to be used for applications including density monitoring of hydrogen-cooled turbines.
Yokogawa Electric has launched the OpreX Gas Density Meter, which rapidly measures gas density. Its user interface features a color touchscreen, and it is equipped with digital communications compliant with Ethernet and RS-485. Support for explosion-proof certification is also being advanced, enabling safety to be ensured in environments where flammable gases are handled.
The instrument measures resonant frequency according to gas density and calculates density, specific gravity, molecular weight, concentration and heat value. Changes in gas composition can be identified in approximately 5 seconds, and a single instrument can measure the concentration of binary gas mixtures such as hydrogen and air or carbon dioxide and hydrogen. It is expected to help reduce equipment costs and improve maintenance efficiency for hydrogen-cooled turbines at power plants.
The explosion-proof version is scheduled to comply with IECEx and the ATEX Directive, with release expected around the end of April 2027. Against a backdrop of growth in the power plant turbine market, containing the risk of explosions caused by the mixing of hydrogen and oxygen is considered important, and monitoring with a density meter is positioned as a requirement for safe operations.
The product is designed to enhance data connectivity, with the stated aim of facilitating integration with higher-level systems. With support for explosion-proof certification, it is also intended for use in environments where flammable gases such as hydrogen and methane are handled.
