The yen weakened in Tokyo foreign-exchange trading on the morning of the 25th. At noon, USD/JPY stood at ¥159.35-36, with the yen down and the dollar up by around ¥0.20 from 5 p.m. the previous day. Speculation that domestic real-demand investors were selling yen and buying dollars weighed on the market.
Dollar buying was said to be dominant ahead of settlement at the 10 a.m. fixing, while dip buying also emerged when the dollar fell against the yen. The yen subsequently weakened and the dollar strengthened to around ¥159.39 at one point.
The market was also weighed down by growing expectations that heightened tensions in the Middle East would persist, after the U.S. government announced new economic measures against Iran on the 24th. Reports said the government plans to expand related sanctions following remarks by U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent.
The yen also weakened against the euro. At noon, EUR/JPY was around ¥185.81-83, while the euro edged lower against the dollar.
