The Nikkei Average began trading on the 28th at ¥66,104.49, down ¥27.49 at the open. U.S. stocks rose in the previous session, and the Tokyo market recovered after opening in line with that trend. By sector, retail and land transportation were among the biggest decliners, while some stocks, particularly semiconductor-related shares, attracted buying.
Among the stocks with the highest trading value, Orix and Sumitomo Electric declined, while Renesas, Fujitsu, NEC, Hitachi, Nintendo, ASICS, FANUC and Lasertec, among others, advanced.
Economic indicators released before the start of trading included a July unemployment rate of 2.4%, a July active job openings-to-applicants ratio of 1.18, and an 1.8% year-on-year increase in August's core CPI for Tokyo's 23 wards, excluding fresh food. The market focused on the Nikkei Average's direction in response to these indicators.
