The Nepalese government announced that it would end the search and rescue operation for people missing after a major landslide in the border region with China. Meanwhile, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary called for the search for Japanese nationals to continue.
Nepalese authorities announced that they had decided to end the search and rescue operation for more than 5,000 people missing after the landslide. Support arrangements in the affected areas are expected to be reorganized, with preparations for recovery and reconstruction under way.
According to estimates since August, at least 1,455 people have died in Nepal, while 5,285 people, including Japanese nationals, remain missing. The government said it would end the search unless new information emerged.
Recovery and reconstruction are estimated to require approximately ¥790 billion, with the operation of shelters and support for rebuilding lives identified as future challenges.
Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara (木原) said at a news conference that he had asked Nepal to continue searching for Japanese nationals. Nepal reportedly responded that it would take action.
