Mitsui O.S.K. Lines held a naming ceremony on 29 October at Qingdao Beihai Shipyard for 3 ammonia-fueled Capesize bulk carriers, the world's first, which it is jointly developing with Belgian shipping group CMB.TECH. CMB.TECH CEO Alexander Saverys and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Senior Executive Officer Takahashi Kazuhiro (高橋 和弘), among others, attended the ceremony.
The 3 vessels were named RURI MIRAI, RURI SEKAI and RURI HIKARI, respectively. The name shared by all 3 vessels, "RURI," reflects a desire to protect the Earth through low-environmental-impact operations and the use of next-generation fuels.
The 3 vessels are scheduled for completion sequentially from early 2027 and are expected to enter service under joint ownership by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and CMB.TECH. Ammonia does not emit CO2, and the 3 vessels are designed to use ammonia fuel.
