Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel (グレッグ・アベル) made his first visit to Tokyo and stated that Berkshire intends to increase its stakes in Japan's five major trading companies. He also indicated plans to expand joint investments and M&A collaboration on a global scale.
He noted that stakes in all 5 of the five major trading companies—Mitsubishi Corporation, ITOCHU Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Sumitomo Corporation and Marubeni Corporation—exceed 10%, and emphasized that Berkshire will continue increasing them. As of 28 August, the total value of its Japanese equities in these companies and Tokio Marine had reached approximately $44 billion (approximately ¥6.9 trillion).
During his visit to Japan, Abel did not discuss a specific timing for additional purchases, saying that the decision would be based on market developments after he returned home. He also disclosed that Berkshire continues to evaluate investment opportunities in Japan.
