A global survey found that Japanese companies tend to place greater emphasis on governance, verification and controls as AI authority expands worldwide. Illumio also announced that ARR from its Japan business rose 79% year on year.
A survey on AI risk perception and management announced by Illumio examined the challenges companies face in maintaining visibility and control in an era when AI not only makes recommendations to humans but also makes decisions and takes action on its own. It found that Japanese companies tend to place greater emphasis on governance, verification and controls as AI authority expands.
Among respondents in Japan, 52% supported strict controls and continuous verification of access to and actions by AI, exceeding the global figure of 33%. In Japan, 45% said risk mitigation should be prioritised, 40% said it should be a prerequisite rather than a pursuit of AI benefits, and 48% said decision-making should be delegated to AI. Meanwhile, only 18% of respondents in Japan said they could fully audit the actions of AI agents.
Illumio announced that ARR from its Japan business rose 79% year on year in the first half of fiscal 2027. Growth was particularly strong in banking and financial services, insurance and manufacturing, with growth rates of 106%, 571% and 49%, respectively. These figures reflect growing demand focused on operational resilience, regulatory compliance and business continuity.
The survey was conducted by Sapio Research on behalf of Illumio, covering 1,100 IT and security decision-makers across 10 markets worldwide. The global figures are unweighted averages. The survey results and growth of the Japan business were shared at a same-day press event at Illumio World Tour Tokyo 2026.
