Tetra Pak has announced Tetra Recart®, described as the industry's first paper-based package for shelf-stable tuna, developed in collaboration with Jealsa. The announcement also covers its launch in Sweden, future rollout plans and evaluation facilities in Japan.
Tetra Pak has announced Tetra Recart®, a paper-based package for shelf-stable tuna products developed in collaboration with Spain's Jealsa as an alternative to cans. The new product was already launched in Sweden in May 2026 as the 200ml Mini through leading retailer Axfood.
As a paper-based alternative to conventional cans, the package is intended to differentiate tuna products in the market. The mass-market segment is forecast to grow by approximately 12% by 2030, reaching an estimated 12.4 billion units.
Tetra Recart® offers cost competitiveness and scalability and currently supports a range of shelf-stable tuna products, including spreadable, flaked, shredded and chunk varieties. The company said it plans to expand the product's rollout in line with market needs.
In Japan, test facilities for the product have been established at the product development centre (PDC) within the Gotemba Technical Centre. The facilities provide an environment for rapidly conducting quality evaluations when switching packaging, as well as product development and testing.
