The Nikkei Average fell for a fourth straight day on selling in US stocks, ending down ¥1,253 at ¥67,777. AI-related stocks plunged across the board, with just 3 stocks dragging down the market, while more than 70% of stocks rose, making for an unusual session.
In the Tokyo stock market on the 13th, following a three-day weekend, the Nikkei Average ended down ¥1,253 from the previous day at ¥67,777. It fell more than ¥400 from the opening, broke below ¥69,000, and although it recovered from its afternoon low, it ended the session down by four digits.
More than 70% of stocks on the TSE Prime Market rose, and the TOPIX turned positive in the afternoon session. In contrast to the Nikkei Average's sharp decline, the lack of concentrated selling in the broader indexes suggests that selling was not widespread.
AI and semiconductor-related stocks plunged across the board, with estimates indicating that Advantest, SoftBank Group and Tokyo Electron alone dragged the Nikkei Average down by about ¥1,200. Kioxia Holdings fell 13.3%.
Rising shipping and trading house stocks attracted funds, while cybersecurity-related stocks were also bought. Newly listed アイビスホールディングス posted a strong opening price, followed by buying in OSG and 大阪有機化学, among others.
The NT ratio fell to the 16.4 range, suggesting that the concentration in high-tech stocks is gradually being corrected. The focus now is whether rotational buying after the AI-related rally runs its course can support the broader Japanese equity market.
