Sigma has filed a new patent for a stacked image sensor for digital cameras. The patent describes a method for reducing peripheral false color while improving light sensitivity by also placing color filters over the storage area.
Sigma has filed a new patent related to its Foveon sensor. The technology covers a stacked sensor in which RGB pixels are layered vertically and is intended to improve false color and reduced sensitivity at the edges.
Conventional stacked sensors have faced the problem of obliquely incident light failing to reach the deeper light-receiving areas, as well as the problem of light entering the storage area and causing false color. Increasing the size of the metal light shield reduces the light-receiving area, resulting in lower sensitivity.
The new patent places color-selective filters over the storage area so that only the red, green or blue component reaches the corresponding area. This is intended to suppress unwanted wavelengths that cause false color while using the storage area as an additional light-receiving area.
The technology addresses issues specific to sensors with RGB layers within each pixel, and detailed filing information is also available on J-PlatPat.
