In FY2027 Q1, revenue increased 6.7% year on year, while operating profit declined 8.2%, resulting in higher revenue but lower profit. Although sales increased in the two core wholesale businesses, profit declined in both. The key focus for FY2027-H1 is whether higher costs are being passed through to selling prices.

Whether revenue remains positive year on year and operating profit recovers from its year-on-year decline (Q1 results: +6.7% and −8.2%, respectively).
Whether segment profit in the fishery products receiving business, at ¥737 million, recovers from the 5.7% year-on-year decline.
Whether segment profit in the off-market fishery products wholesale business, at ¥63 million, turns to year-on-year growth from the 69.9% decline.
Whether the operating margin exceeds approximately 1.27% in Q1 and approximately 1.48% in the year-earlier period.
Revenue in FY2027 Q1 was ¥88,198 million, up 6.7% year on year, while operating profit was ¥1,121 million, down 8.2%. Net profit attributable to owners of the parent also declined 12.2% to ¥863 million. The operating margin, calculated from revenue and operating profit, was approximately 1.27%, down approximately 0.21 percentage points from approximately 1.48% in the year-earlier period. The key point is that, rather than demand itself contracting, revenue growth is still not translating readily into profit.
The earnings presentation stated that the year-on-year increase in revenue was driven by ¥3,638 million from the fishery products receiving business, ¥1,913 million from the off-market fishery products wholesale business and ¥158 million from the aquaculture business, while other businesses reduced revenue by ¥150 million. However, the year-on-year change in operating profit comprised an increase of ¥193 million from aquaculture, offset by declines of ¥147 million from the fishery products receiving business, ¥100 million from the off-market fishery products wholesale business and ¥45 million from other businesses, resulting in a ¥99 million decline in consolidated operating profit. The two wholesale businesses driving revenue growth are therefore facing headwinds on the profit side.
By segment, the fishery products receiving business posted revenue of ¥55,186 million, up 7.8% year on year, but profit declined 5.7% to ¥737 million. The off-market fishery products wholesale business likewise reported revenue of ¥34,273 million, up 8.2%, while profit fell 69.9% to ¥63 million. By contrast, aquaculture performed strongly, with revenue of ¥2,436 million, up 3.4%, and profit of ¥440 million, up 78.0%. The food processing business reported revenue of ¥1,016 million, down 2.1%, but posted profit of ¥2 million, returning to profitability. In FY2027-H1, it will be necessary to check not only whether aquaculture profit continues to grow, but also whether the declines in the two wholesale businesses, which make a larger contribution to consolidated profit, narrow.
The company cited higher product procurement costs, a lower gross profit margin, increased expenses including materials, logistics and labor costs, and narrower spreads as factors behind the decline in profit. However, as of Q1 it had not disclosed the gross profit margin, SG&A expenses, or the amount of the increases in logistics and labor costs. Accordingly, in H1 it will be important to check, wherever possible on a monetary basis, whether the operating margin exceeds Q1's 1.27%, whether segment profit in the two wholesale businesses improves year on year, and whether price pass-through has halted the decline in the gross margin.
