Can Q1 revenue and profit growth lead to a full-year recovery in H1?

FY2027 Q1 revenue was ¥3,946 million, up 4.1% year on year, while operating profit was ¥83 million, up 43.9%, and ordinary profit was ¥100 million, up 30.1%. However, profit attributable to owners of the parent was ¥56 million, down 42.4%. Improvement at the top-line and operating-profit levels therefore did not translate directly into higher net profit.

The full-year FY2027 forecast announced on 14 May calls for revenue of ¥18,900 million, operating profit of ¥1,200 million and net profit of ¥910 million. A simple calculation of Q1 progress gives 20.9% for revenue and 6.9% for operating profit, showing that operating profit is lagging revenue. To reach the full-year forecast from FY2026 actual results of ¥17,809 million in revenue and ¥483 million in operating profit, revenue must increase by ¥1,091 million, or 6.1%, and operating profit by ¥717 million, or 148.4%.

The company stated that, as of Q1, it had made no changes to its initial full-year earnings forecast. However, Q1 operating profit of only ¥83 million does not show whether the profit recovery needed to achieve the ¥1,200 million full-year target is already progressing in H1 or is premised on being concentrated in H2. The H1 results should therefore be reviewed for cumulative revenue and operating profit, as well as any changes to the full-year forecast and the reasons for those changes.

H1 cumulative revenue of ¥9,450 million and operating profit of ¥600 million are merely benchmarks obtained by mechanically halving the full-year forecast, not half-year targets provided by the company. Falling below these levels alone should not be treated as a shortfall. It is also necessary to assess whether semiconductor-related demand from Q1 continued into Q2, whether margin improvement continued, and whether the assumptions underlying the full-year forecast have changed.
