The company's ongoing themes and initiatives this watchpoint touches on.
First-quarter revenue was ¥88,799 million, up ¥8,602 million from ¥80,197 million in the same period of the previous year. Operating profit, however, fell ¥2,830 million to ¥1,526 million from ¥4,356 million. The operating margin declined from approximately 5.4% to approximately 1.7%, a typical pattern of margin compression in which higher revenue fails to translate into higher profit. Profit before tax was also limited to ¥1,823 million, while profit attributable to owners of the parent was ¥989 million.
The company cited higher-than-expected component prices, including memory, company-wide increases in fixed costs such as personnel expenses, restructuring costs and the reversal of a gain on the transfer of fixed assets recorded in the same period of the previous year as factors behind the deterioration in profit. In addition, the closure of U.S. government agencies weighed on profit in the Safety & Security segment. As these factors combine one-off items with structural cost increases, the next results should be examined to distinguish the amount recovered through price revisions, the remaining impact of higher component prices and the portion of higher fixed costs attributable to future investment, such as additional staffing.
The full-year forecast remains unchanged at revenue of ¥364,000 million, operating profit of ¥20,600 million, profit before tax of ¥21,000 million and profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥15,000 million. First-quarter progress was only approximately 24.4% for revenue and 7.4% for operating profit, indicating that profit is significantly behind a simple even-quarter progression. If the interim period is compared mechanically with 50% of the full-year forecast, revenue of ¥182,000 million and operating profit of ¥10,300 million provide useful benchmarks. Seasonality should be taken into account, however, and these are mechanical measures of progress, not company guidance.
For FY2027-H1, it will not be sufficient simply to confirm revenue growth. Based on the first-quarter profit level, the key questions are whether higher component prices are being absorbed through price revisions, whether restructuring costs have run their course and whether the closure of U.S. government agencies continues to affect sales and profit. In particular, it will be important to see whether the operating margin improves from approximately 1.7% in the first quarter and whether the company provides a specific explanation of the second-quarter profit level required to achieve its full-year forecast.
