FY2027 Q1 sales rose 1.8% year on year to ¥11.155 billion, while operating profit turned into a ¥47 million operating loss from ¥437 million the previous year. Higher raw material costs and marketing expenses weighed heavily, making the normalization of gross margin and SG&A the key point to monitor in FY2027 H1.

After operating profit deteriorated from ¥437 million in the prior-year period to a ¥47 million loss, can the company return to operating profitability on a cumulative H1 basis?
Can gross margin recover from 36.6%, down 2.2 percentage points year on year, to around 38.8%?
Will the combined ¥538 million burden from cost factors (¥243 million) and marketing expenses (¥295 million) narrow in H1?
With no disclosure of category-level profit or raw material unit prices, will the H1 results include additional detail on gross margin and SG&A?
FY2027 Q1 sales rose 1.8% year on year to ¥11.155 billion, securing higher revenue, but operating profit turned into a ¥47 million loss from ¥437 million in the prior-year period. Ordinary profit also declined to ¥112 million from ¥591 million, while net income attributable to owners of the parent turned from a ¥352 million profit to a ¥13 million loss. The failure of sales growth to translate into earnings is the highest-priority issue to verify in the next results.
According to the earnings materials, gross profit was ¥4.08 billion and gross margin was 36.6%, down 2.2 percentage points year on year. SG&A was ¥4.13 billion, bringing SG&A as a percentage of sales to 37.1%. In addition to the decline in gross profit, the cost burden widened the operating loss. The year-on-year change in operating profit was negative ¥485 million: volume contributed positive ¥16 million, selling prices positive ¥47 million, and deductions from sales and other factors positive ¥68 million, while disposal and valuation losses and other items contributed negative ¥55 million, cost factors negative ¥243 million, marketing expenses negative ¥295 million, and other SG&A negative ¥22 million.
In the previous full fiscal year, operating profit improved to ¥1.986 billion, up 19.8% year on year, and the operating margin reached 4.1%, helped by price increases for core products, efforts to contain procurement cost increases by reviewing suppliers, and the disappearance of consulting-related expenses. In the current Q1, however, marketing expenses increased by ¥295 million year on year as the company both reversed its prior-year restraint on some TV commercial placements and increased TV advertising for new products. With the prior-year cost-control benefits having fallen away, the focus is on whether price pass-through and procurement improvements can offset advertising investment.
In FY2027 H1, the first point to confirm is whether operating profit can return to positive territory, followed by whether gross margin can recover from 36.6% to approximately the prior-year level of 38.8%. In addition, category-level operating profit and gross margin are not disclosed, and the reporting structure consists of a single segment, the Household Products Business, so the earnings materials alone do not show which product groups are generating profit. In the H1 results, it will be important to see whether the breakdown of raw material costs, marketing expenses, deductions from sales, and disposal and valuation losses is provided at the same level of detail as in Q1.
