Can the System Solutions business sustain and expand revenue of ¥1,661 million and segment profit of ¥363 million?
Will the Engineering Solutions business return to profitability from its first-quarter segment loss of ¥14 million?
Will consolidated operating profit exceed the first-quarter ¥20 million and improve from the 0.8% operating margin?
Will the company disclose order intake, order backlog and the value of high-margin projects, which have not been disclosed as factors driving the change in revenue?
Consolidated first-quarter revenue rose 2.0% year on year to ¥2,535 million, but operating profit fell 24.0% to ¥20 million. The gross profit margin improved 0.5 percentage points year on year to 37.6%, but the operating margin remained at 0.8%. Higher selling, general and administrative expenses, including personnel costs associated with increased hiring, depreciation related to the SAP implementation and the introduction of a corporate defined-contribution pension plan, weighed on earnings.
By segment, the System Solutions business posted revenue of ¥1,661 million and segment profit of ¥363 million, up 11.4% and 43.7%, respectively, year on year. In contrast, the Engineering Solutions business posted revenue of ¥779 million and a segment loss of ¥14 million, with revenue down 12.1% year on year. On a consolidated basis, higher profit from the former offset the latter's revenue decline and loss.
For the full previous fiscal year, the System Solutions business posted revenue of ¥6,798 million and segment profit of ¥1,504 million, while the Engineering Solutions business posted revenue of ¥3,821 million and segment profit of ¥462 million. The immediate issue is therefore not simply a temporary increase in company-wide expenses, but whether the reason the previously profitable Engineering Solutions business posted a loss in the first quarter was limited to the change in FlexSim's sales model and failed PLM project renewals, or reflects a structural change in business profitability.
At the next earnings release, we will assess whether high-value and new projects in the System Solutions business continue beyond the second quarter and whether segment profit exceeds the first-quarter result of ¥363 million. At the same time, the recovery in Engineering Solutions revenue, the new FlexSim sales model and the renewal status of PLM operation and maintenance projects will need to be monitored. As order intake, order backlog and detailed selling, general and administrative expense amounts have not been disclosed, whether these figures are provided next time will also be an important point of verification.
