How far the consolidated gross margin recovers during the first half from 57.6%. The 66.7% full-year FY2026 result is the benchmark.
Whether the ¥280 million in Q1 strategic investment continues into Q2 or is reduced.
Whether the Q1 operating margin of 5.8% improves during the first half toward the full-year forecast of 14.7%.
Whether the factors behind the increases in cost of sales to ¥1,463 million and SG&A expenses to ¥1,784 million are disclosed quantitatively in Q2.
Revenue in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027 was ¥3,448 million and operating profit was ¥200 million, up 41.0% and 39.0%, respectively, from the same period a year earlier. However, the gross margin shown in the earnings presentation was 57.6%, down 10.8 percentage points year on year. The operating margin was also only 5.8%, leaving a substantial gap in quarterly profitability compared with the 13.3% recorded for the full fiscal year ended March 2026.
The decline in margins reflects upfront costs incurred to meet expanding demand. First-quarter cost of sales was ¥1,463 million and selling, general and administrative expenses were ¥1,784 million. The presentation identified approximately ¥200 million in fourth-quarter-specific costs, approximately ¥100 million in additional first-quarter-specific costs and approximately ¥280 million in strategic investment as factors weighing on profit. In particular, it is important to determine whether the ¥280 million strategic investment represents ongoing expenditure related to AI development, advertising and sales technology development and increased staffing, rather than a simple seasonal factor.
By segment, the AI Product Business generated revenue of ¥1,585 million and segment profit of ¥518 million, while the AI Solution Services Business generated revenue of ¥1,909 million and segment profit of ¥450 million. The calculated segment margins are approximately 32.7% and 23.6%, respectively, but the combined segment profit of ¥968 million does not reconcile with consolidated operating profit of ¥200 million. The available disclosure does not provide sufficient detail on the adjustments and shared costs between segment profit and consolidated operating profit, so the first-half results will need to clarify the size of these adjustments and the reasons for changes in them.
The company has indicated that it expects improvement in Q2, but has not disclosed specific first-half targets for gross margin, operating margin or strategic investment. Accordingly, at the next earnings announcement we will assess whether the gross margin approaches the 66.7% FY2026 full-year result, whether the operating margin recovers from 5.8% to the double digits, and whether the approximately ¥280 million in first-quarter strategic investment translated into revenue growth or higher productivity, together with segment-level expenses.
