Whether the 0.7-point year-on-year decline in the 7.7% gross margin narrows in H1
FY2027-Q1 revenue rose 8.0% year on year to ¥176,361 million, while operating profit fell 5.7% to ¥2,784 million. The operating margin in the earnings presentation was 1.6%, down approximately 0.2 points from approximately 1.8% a year earlier. The gross margin also declined 0.7 points year on year to 7.7%, indicating that profitability is under pressure from the gross profit stage despite higher revenue.
The full-year plan calls for revenue of ¥740,000 million and operating profit of ¥26,000 million. On a simple calculation, Q1 represented 23.8% of the revenue plan and only 10.7% of the operating profit plan, with profit progress lagging revenue progress. The company described Q1 consolidated results as “generally in line with plan,” but the earnings presentation did not disclose numerical progress against the full-year plan or the profit level required at the end of H1. On a simple six-month basis, revenue of ¥370,000 million and operating profit of ¥13,000 million are the relevant benchmarks.
By segment in Q1, Total Pack Produce recorded revenue of ¥26,659 million and operating profit of ¥467 million, Medical Supply ¥131,991 million and ¥1,088 million, Life Care ¥9,103 million and ¥463 million, and Pharmacy ¥8,607 million and ¥850 million. Delays in price negotiations with manufacturers, weaker demand for medical equipment and device replacements, and higher inflation and service-maintenance costs were cited as factors weighing on profit. In H1, it will be necessary to determine whether these are temporary factors or structural pressures that will persist in the gross and operating margins.
At the next earnings announcement, the focus will be not only on revenue growth but also on the extent of recovery from the 7.7% gross margin, the increase in SG&A expenses, and the quantified impact of price negotiations. The Q1 materials did not disclose the breakdown of SG&A expenses, a profit bridge by factor, or operating assumptions such as foreign exchange rates and raw-material prices. A key test will be whether the H1 operating margin exceeds at least the 1.6% recorded in Q1 and whether profit progress toward the ¥26,000 million full-year operating profit plan improves.
