Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

The results were affected by the reversal of the Osaka Expo-related demand boost in the hotel business, the fact that new hotels were still establishing their earnings base, a decline in the recurring continuation rate and an increase in advertising expenses in the cosmetics mail-order business, proactive advertising in the gourmet mail-order business, higher costs resulting from the weaker yen and rising raw material prices, as well as restrictions on the volume of print media issued in the apparel and sundries business, and the processing of remaining matters in preparation for withdrawal from other businesses. Meanwhile, higher dividend income and lower payment fees pushed up ordinary profit.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Operating profit declined due to lower sales at hotels in the Kansai area following the reversal of the Osaka Expo-related demand boost and the resulting increase in the fixed-cost ratio, the fact that newly opened hotels were still establishing their earnings base, a decline in the recurring continuation rate and an increase in advertising expenses in the cosmetics mail-order business, and proactive advertising in the gourmet mail-order business. Ordinary profit increased despite higher interest expenses, mainly due to an increase in dividend income and a decrease in payment fees.
