Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

Earnings contributions from acquisitions overseas, the benefit of higher yen interest rates and improved margins, the earnings improvement effect from the prior year's bond portfolio rebalancing, increased fee income in Japan and overseas, and the reversal of losses on sales recognized in connection with the prior year's bond portfolio rebalancing. Operating expenses increased due to overseas acquisitions, investment of resources for growth, and the effects of inflation. Credit-related costs were affected primarily by the reversal of the prior year's release of provisions for a large overseas credit exposure, gains and losses related to stocks and other securities were affected by the reversal of the prior year's large gains on sales of cross-shareholdings, and equity-method investment gains and losses were driven mainly by Morgan Stanley's strong performance.
