Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

Revenue increased, led mainly by Metals, Food & Agri, and Next-Generation Business Development. Gross profit increased due to higher profits in Next-Generation Business Development and Food & Agri, among other factors, although profit declined in Power & Infrastructure Services. Operating profit declined because of higher selling, general and administrative expenses. Profit attributable to owners of the parent benefited from the Chilean copper business in Metals, the absence of the impairment loss recorded in the previous fiscal year in Power & Infrastructure Services, and valuation gains associated with the integration of the domestic real estate business. These gains were partly offset by the absence of the gain on realization of foreign currency translation adjustments in Energy & Chemicals and valuation losses.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Revenue increased mainly in Metals, Food & Agri, and Next-Generation Business Development. Gross profit increased due to the acquisitions of the pharmaceutical sales business and the electronic components-related business, as well as higher profits in the domestic poultry business and the U.S. fertilizer wholesale business, but operating profit declined because of higher selling, general and administrative expenses. Profit attributable to owners of the parent benefited from valuation gains associated with the integration of the domestic real estate business, among other factors. The share repurchase authorization was expanded to enable the flexible execution of capital policies and further enhance shareholder returns.
