The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Although housing market conditions remained weak in the domestic exterior building materials business, price revisions resulted in higher sales. In the U.S. exterior building materials business, sales declined following the withdrawal from the general-purpose exterior building materials business serving the housing market. On the earnings side, the effects of price revisions in Japan, the withdrawal from unprofitable businesses in the United States, and improved foreign exchange gains and losses contributed to results. Net income also benefited from the recognition of a gain on the sale of fixed assets by a Chinese subsidiary, among other factors.
