Net sales decreased due to sluggish same-store sales in the home-use business, delays in introducing some new products, and stagnant consumption in overseas businesses. Although the gross profit margin declined by 1.9 percentage points because of rising raw material costs, operating profit was secured through improved profit margins at overseas sales subsidiaries, a decrease in the deduction for unrealized gains resulting from inventory reductions, and lower selling, general and administrative expenses. Foreign exchange gains of ¥68 million were recorded, an improvement from the foreign exchange loss of ¥343 million in the same period of the previous year.

The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Net sales were affected by sluggish same-store sales in the home-use business, delays in introducing some new products, and stagnant consumption in overseas businesses. Operating profit was adversely affected by higher manufacturing costs due to rising raw material costs, while improvements in the profit margins of overseas sales subsidiaries, a decrease in the deduction for unrealized gains resulting from inventory reductions, and lower selling, general and administrative expenses contributed positively. Ordinary profit and net income benefited from the change from a foreign exchange loss in the same period of the previous year to a foreign exchange gain in the current period.
