General industrial bearings recorded higher sales and profit, reflecting a recovery in demand for semiconductors, machine tools and molding machines. Automotive bearings recorded higher sales and profit, supported by increased automobile production in India and Thailand, the effects of initiatives targeting non-Japanese manufacturers, particularly in China and India, and foreign exchange effects. Structural machinery recorded lower sales and profit because of project delays and cancellations caused by soaring materials prices and labor shortages. Construction machinery recorded higher sales despite the impact of weak market conditions for housing, and the segment loss narrowed. Net income declined because of costs for demolishing existing buildings in connection with the reconstruction of the testing building at the Ashikaga plant.

The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers. In the general industrial bearings business, sales and orders for semiconductor-related products, machine tools and molding machines were strong. The decline in net income was attributable to the recognition of costs for demolishing existing buildings in connection with the reconstruction of the testing building at the Ashikaga plant. The first-half forecast was revised because sales and segment profit in the general industrial bearings business are expected to exceed the previous forecast. The full-year forecast was unchanged because of uncertainty surrounding trade policy and the situation in the Middle East, among other factors.
