The automotive sintered products business posted higher sales, supported by the stable global production and sales of major customers, increased order volumes for inverter components for hybrid vehicles, and higher sales of engine components for Japan. Profit declined due to increases in raw material prices, energy prices and labor costs, the timing gap before these increases were reflected in selling prices, the reversal of price pass-through from the same period of the previous year, and the reversal of the previous year's special demand for brake linings for high-speed trains. The company recorded gains on the sale of investment securities and fixed assets as extraordinary income, and business structure improvement expenses as an extraordinary loss.

The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Although the company proceeded with price adjustments in response to increases in raw material prices, energy prices and labor costs, part of the cost increases was not reflected in selling prices until the third quarter and later. Other factors reducing profit included the fact that fluctuations in raw material unit prices in prior years had been reflected in selling prices in the same period of the previous year, and the reversal of the previous year's special demand for brake linings for high-speed trains.
