Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

The Refractories and Ceramics Business reported increases in both net sales and profit as a result of strengthened sales efforts, the development of new customers, productivity improvements and price pass-through for higher raw material and fuel costs. The Plant Business reported higher sales as the construction division remained solid, but profit declined because of higher costs, including labor costs. The Building Materials and Paving Materials Business reported lower sales because of a temporary decline in demand related to the Expo, but worked to implement price revisions and reduce costs. The Real Estate Leasing Business contributed stable earnings, partly as a result of higher rents.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

In the Refractories and Ceramics Business, the company strengthened sales to existing customers, developed new customers, improved productivity and passed on higher raw material and fuel costs through price increases. In the Plant Business, the construction division remained solid, but profit declined because the increase in costs, including labor costs, could not be fully absorbed.
