The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers. For operating profit, higher selling prices and increased sales volumes in the display business contributed to higher profit, while the conversion to all-electric melting facilities, periodic repair costs, soaring raw material and fuel prices, and startup costs for glass manufacturing facilities for the medical business contributed to lower profit. Under extraordinary gains and losses, a ¥15.7 billion business structure improvement expense was incurred in connection with structural reform at the composite materials business's operations in Europe and the United States.
