Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

The factors affecting results were the decline in average crude oil prices for the period, increased export volumes of petroleum products, improved refinery utilization, narrower losses arising from the inventory impact, gains on the sale of the shipping business, higher electricity sales volumes and the commencement of full-scale operations at the Goi Thermal Power Plant, and higher profit in the Other Businesses. In Oil and Natural Gas Exploration and Production, lower production volumes and selling prices reduced profit. In Functional Materials, higher expenses, lower butadiene market prices and impairment losses reduced profit.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Revenue decreased mainly because average crude oil prices for the period declined. Operating profit increased as losses arising from the inventory impact in the Petroleum Products and Other segment narrowed, while improved refinery utilization, higher export volumes and gains on the sale of the shipping business also contributed. Profit also increased in the Electricity and Other Businesses segments. In contrast, lower production volumes and selling prices in the Oil and Natural Gas Exploration and Production segment, and higher expenses, lower butadiene market prices and impairment losses in the Functional Materials segment, were factors reducing profit.
