「In January 2024, we launched a new business involving human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells, or “iPSC-MSCs.” Because iPSC-MSCs are manufactured by expanding iPS cells on a large scale and then differentiating them into mesenchymal stem cells, it is possible to produce large quantities of mesenchymal stem cells semi-permanently from iPS cells from a single donor. This makes it possible to overcome differences between donors and the challenges associated with culture scale. We position these cells as second-generation regenerative medicine products based on current adipose-derived and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, and plan to develop the business going forward.」
The iPSC-MSC business was newly launched in January 2024. Through a manufacturing process in which iPS cells are expanded at scale and then differentiated into mesenchymal stem cells, the company aims to address the challenges of large-scale production from a single donor, donor-to-donor variability and culture scale.
