Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

Although duty-free sales in China for the Tarte business and KOSE business grew, they could not offset declines in revenue from the Albion business and KOSE Cosmeport business. Operating profit was affected by lower profit from the Albion business, KOSE Cosmeport business and Tarte business, as well as higher expenses for large-scale promotions, in-store promotions and sales promotion for new products, and the higher cost ratio in the cosmetary business. The decline in operating profit was partially offset at the ordinary profit level by increased foreign exchange gains resulting from the weaker yen, while net income attributable to owners of the parent for the quarter declined due to the reversal of the gain on the sale of non-current assets recorded in the same period of the previous year.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Growth in duty-free sales in China and elsewhere was insufficient to offset declines in revenue from the Albion business and KOSE Cosmeport business, while lower profit from the Albion business, KOSE Cosmeport business and Tarte business pushed down operating profit. In addition, profits were pressured by a large-scale promotion commemorating the company's 70th anniversary, in-store promotions and dedicated fixtures for the Tarte business, sales promotion expenses for new products, and a higher cost ratio in the cosmetary business. Net income was also affected by the reversal of a gain on the sale of non-current assets recorded in the same period of the previous year.
