Factors Behind Changes in Business Performance

Sales of resin additives, including flame retardants and antioxidants, were weak, while sales of PVC stabilizers were strong. Semiconductor materials performed well, including semiconductor lithography materials, but fixed costs increased due to additional research and development personnel and the construction of new production plants. Environmental Materials performed well, driven by lubricant additives and specialty epoxy resins. Food products, including high-function kneading materials, remained firm, while sales of shortening and margarine products were weak in China. The Life Science business benefited from strong sales of agricultural chemicals in Europe, North America and Japan.

The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

During the fiscal year, sales of agricultural chemicals in Europe, North America and Japan were strong in the Life Science business, while sales of lubricant additives and specialty epoxy resins increased in Environmental Materials. In Chemicals, however, sales of resin additives were weak and the business incurred upfront investment costs for semiconductor materials. For the next fiscal year, the company expects sales of semiconductor materials, lubricant additives for automobiles, high-function food products and agricultural chemicals to expand.
