The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Revenue increased due to higher selling prices in the Semiconductor segment and increased shipment volumes in the Electronic Materials segment and other businesses. Operating income was affected by higher raw material prices and increased costs, but rose on higher selling prices, increased freight-handling volumes in the Transportation business and improved profitability. Net income included a gain on changes in equity interests associated with a capital increase by a domestic affiliate. The full-year forecast was left unchanged because, although higher raw material prices and other factors are expected to increase costs, selling prices have been raised and shipments in the Semiconductor and Electronic Materials segments remain firm.
