Higher sales volumes, mainly of semiconductor-related products and products from the polymer and oligomer businesses, revisions to selling prices, improved profitability and increased production efficiency contributed to earnings. These gains were offset by lower sales volumes of acrylic monomers and higher major scheduled maintenance costs in the basic chemicals business, while deterioration in earnings from the transport business was a factor behind lower profit in the other businesses.
